SANTA ANA: WISEPlace Permanent Supportive Housing

Jamboree renovation of WISEPlace in Santa Ana into permanent supportive housing

Jamboree, a nonprofit affordable housing developer, is partnering with WISEPlace – a shelter for unaccompanied women in Santa Ana, California – in the renovation of WISEPlace’s existing 26,030-square-foot facility. Home to WISEPlace for more than 95 years, this adaptive reuse and new construction transformation includes the historical landmark restoration and modern expansion of the former YWCA to provide Permanent Supportive Housing for 47 individuals currently experiencing homelessness – including seniors, unaccompanied women, and other vulnerable residents.

Helping end homelessness in Santa Ana

Jamboree, WISEPlace, and the City of Santa Ana share the passion of residents, other homeless service providers, and advocate partners to provide meaningful solutions to both the immediate crisis of homelessness in the area and the ongoing need for permanent housing solutions.

Located at 1411 N. Broadway in Santa Ana as the former YWCA, WISEPlace has been one such solution for homeless women for more than 95 years. WISEPlace is a leader in ending homelessness for unaccompanied women – women who are not married and do not have any dependents.

Innovative funding moves initiative forward

With national housing policy guidance, Jamboree and WISEPlace leveraged its combined policy expertise and collaborative funding strategies to unlock last-mile funding to move forward on this unique affordable housing development first envisioned in 2019. This included once-in-a-generation dollars designated and invested via a $1.5 million American Recovery Plan Act (APRA) grant from Supervisor Katrina Foley, Orange County Board of Supervisors.

With this funding in October 2022, the joint venture partners move forward on this unique affordable housing development first envisioned in 2019. WISEPlace is a leading example for other cities in California and beyond on how ARPA dollars can be used to fund new affordable housing (in addition to Homekey developments) and address the pressing need of more housing – especially for those at risk of or experiencing homelessness.

A shared vision: Permanent housing with services

The vision for the renovated and expanded N. Broadway facility is to transform this property into Permanent Supportive Housing that will consist of 48 fully furnished studio apartments. The renovated building will also include an operational kitchen with dining hall, classrooms, dedicated wrap-around service areas with private counseling and case management spaces, and a welcoming outdoor area complete with community gardens.

These residents will have onsite access to trained professionals who can provide services and support – including case management, life skills education, and opportunities for social connections and meaningful activities – that will keep them active, stable, and thriving in their local neighborhood.
